A proxy server is a way of connecting to the Internet through another computer. Proxy servers are good for:
1. Obscuring your identity and IP address when you are surfing through a browser.
2. Appearing to connect from a different location (useful for dissidents who want to reach media sites from countries that censor their Internet).
Proxy servers are relatively "old school" and don't provide the kind of protection and privacy that you get when you use a VPN service. While most are able to hide your IP address, your data travels unencrypted to the proxy server host, where it picks up tags as it passes through routers - which can often be used to back-trace to the original IP address. While proxy servers can be effective at allowing access to sites blocked by some companies, they are no longer an effective way to insure privacy.
You can read more about Proxy Servers on our Proxy Server FAQ page.
The table below includes a short review of the major proxy server providers and our recommendations for the best solution depending on the type of user you are.
